Rome to Pompeii day trips at a glance
A Rome to Pompeii day trip is a long day. The coach tour runs 9 to 12 hours and the high-speed train package about 9 hours, because most of the time goes into getting there and back. Pick the format for how you want to spend the time at the site: a coach with a guide, or a train with free time to walk on your own.
Pompeii has fixed opening hours. From 16 March to 14 October the site is open 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry at 17:30, and from 15 October to 15 March it is open 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 15:30. Check the meeting time in your confirmation and plan the day around it.

Rome to Pompeii tours: the main types
Compared by transport, guide and time on site.
| Type | Transport | Guide in Pompeii | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coach tour | Air-conditioned coach from Rome, 9 to 12 h | Licensed English-speaking guide | Fast-track entry; lunch, Vesuvius entry and a guided crater hike only if you choose those options; no hotel pickup |
| High-speed train, own pace | Rail Rome to Naples, private coach to Pompeii, 9 h | None | About 5 hours at the site; assistance during the transfers; fast-track entry |
For most first-time visitors, the coach tour with a guide is the simplest choice. Pick the high-speed train day if you want to walk the site at your own speed and do not need a guide.
Rome to Pompeii day trip by train
One package uses the high-speed rail line from Rome to Naples.
It includes round-trip high-speed rail between Rome and Naples, a private coach between Naples and Pompeii and a fast-track entrance ticket to the Archaeological Park. You get about five hours to explore on your own, with a person who helps you at the rail and vehicle transfers. A guided tour of Pompeii is not part of it. The meeting point is in central Rome, so read the voucher carefully on the morning.
You can also do the journey without a tour, on a regular train from Rome to Naples and then a local connection. A fast train does not run to the park's ticket offices, so you need a local leg on the last stretch. The getting there page explains the stations and how they match the entrances.
Rome to Pompeii with the coast or Naples
Plan these as separate days.
No tour on this page includes a stop on the Amalfi Coast, so plan the coast as its own day, for example from the Sorrento page. If you would like to spend a night in Naples, the Naples underground guide has ideas for the city.
Visit Pompeii from Rome: which ticket?
The Express ticket costs EUR 20 and covers the ancient city without the suburban villas. The Plus ticket costs EUR 25 and adds the named villas, Villa Regina and the shuttle (prices valid from 12 January 2026). The Villa of the Mysteries needs the Plus route, so a day tour with an Express ticket does not include it. For Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day, which are two separate parks with separate tickets, see Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day. Sun, heat, rain and slippery paths can affect your visit, and the visiting tips cover shoes and what to bring. Bags are limited to 30 x 30 x 15 cm, larger items go to the luggage storage.
