Pompeii tours at a glance
Pompeii tours fall into a few types. A guided visit starts at the gate and lasts 2 to 3 hours, with the ticket included in many offers. A day trip adds a bus or train from Naples, Rome or Sorrento. Combination tours add Herculaneum or Vesuvius. The right choice depends on where you sleep and how much of the day you want to spend on the road.
Always check the Includes list of the tour you pick. A pick-up, lunch, a guide and an entry ticket are separate items, and they are not the same in every tour. Prices are in euros as of 2026 and they change.

Our picks: Pompeii tours
The two-hour tour suits you if you are already near the site, the Naples trip if you want transport arranged, and the Rome coach for a long day out. Herculaneum or Vesuvius options add a second stop; check which entry ticket each tour uses before you book.

Guided visit on site with an archaeologist
This is the plain Pompeii tour: you meet at the gate, walk with a guide for 2 or 3 hours in a small group and see the main streets and houses. The offers include the Pompei Express entry ticket, a guide with an archaeology background and headsets for larger groups. Transport is not part of it, and neither are food and drinks. Some offers let you stay in the ruins on your own afterwards.
A tour of about 3 hours with the Pompei Plus ticket also includes the Villa of the Mysteries. Express guided tours do not. Read more on the guided tour page and the Villa of the Mysteries page.
Day trips from Naples
Naples tours bring the transport with them. Typical offers run 3 to 3.5 hours in total and include a bus both ways, the entry and a guide. A train-based option includes return train tickets, the entry and a guided visit if you select that option. Meeting points are set at booking, and a pick-up at your hotel is not part of every tour. See Pompeii from Naples.
Day trips from Rome
Rome is the longest day. One option is a full-day coach trip of 9 to 12 hours with an English-speaking guide in Pompeii. Another uses the high-speed train to Naples and a coach on to Pompeii, with about 5 hours at your own pace and no guided tour. Lunch and the Vesuvius extras depend on the option you choose. See Pompeii from Rome.
Day trips from Sorrento
From Sorrento you can take a train-based tour that starts at Sorrento station, with return local train tickets, the entry and a two-hour guided visit. A longer option adds Vesuvius and lunch by bus. Sorrento is also the usual starting point if you come from the Amalfi Coast. See Pompeii from Sorrento.
Combination tours with Herculaneum
Herculaneum is a separate park with its own entry. Small-group tours of both sites include both tickets and a guide, and some add a Circumvesuviana train ride between them. The tour from Naples includes return transport, and the tour starting in Pompeii includes only a one-way train ride between the sites. A Pompeii ticket on its own does not cover Herculaneum. See Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day.
Pompeii and Vesuvius tours
Day tours with Vesuvius include the Pompeii visit, lunch in some offers and a separate entry to the Vesuvius national park. Whether you hike to the crater depends on the option you choose. The Pompeii ticket does not include the crater. See Pompeii and Vesuvius.
Transfer and audio guide are not a guided tour
Some tours give you transport and an entry ticket without a guide, and some give you an audio guide on top of the entry. Neither is a person leading the visit. The Rome train option has no guided tour at all. Read the Includes list before you book.
Which tour fits you
A short guide to the types above.
| Tour type | Starting point | Length | Guide | Transport |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guided visit on site | Pompeii gate | 2 to 3 h | Archaeologist | โ |
| Day trip from Naples | Naples | 3.5 h and up | In most offers | Bus or train |
| Day trip from Rome | Rome | 9 to 12 h | Coach tour yes, train option no | Coach or train |
| Day trip from Sorrento | Sorrento station | 2 h visit, longer with Vesuvius | Yes | Train or bus |
| Pompeii and Herculaneum | Pompeii or Naples | 5.5 to 7 h | Guide or assistant | Train, or transfer from Naples |
For most visitors staying in Naples, a guided visit with a train or a short bus tour is the simplest. If you sleep in Rome, expect a long day. If you want one tour that covers both ancient cities, book the combination.
