Pompeii and Herculaneum at a glance

Pompeii and Herculaneum both lie below Vesuvius, and many visitors want to see both. They are two separate archaeological parks with their own tickets and their own hours. A Pompei Express or Pompei Plus ticket does not include Herculaneum, and the UNESCO ensemble that covers both does not mean a shared ticket.

A Pompeii and Herculaneum tour solves the planning: it names both entrances and the transfer in between. The tours below run from about 5.5 hours for a walking tour that starts in Pompeii to about 7 hours or more for tours with transport. No tour can promise that you see both sites completely in a short time, so choose the length that fits your day.

Pompeii and Herculaneum tour: the main options

What each starting point includes.

Starting in Pompeii, by train

The small-group tour lasts about 5.5 hours and starts at Piazza Esedra in Pompei. It includes guidance for the whole tour, the Express admission for Pompeii, the Herculaneum admission and a one-way Circumvesuviana ticket from Pompeii to Herculaneum. It does not include pickup, a return trip or meals. Plan your own way back after the visit.

From Naples with transport

The seven-hour tour has return transport from selected central meeting points in Naples, an archaeologist guide at both sites and both entrance tickets. A light lunch is included only if you choose that option. See also Pompeii from Naples.

Tickets to Pompeii and Herculaneum

Two parks, two sets of prices, valid in 2026.

SiteTicketPriceHours
PompeiiPompei Express, city without the suburban villasEUR 2016 Mar to 14 Oct 09:00 to 19:00, last entry 17:30; 15 Oct to 15 Mar 09:00 to 17:00, last entry 15:30
PompeiiPompei+, with the named villas, Villa Regina and the shuttleEUR 25Same as above
HerculaneumFull priceEUR 16, reduced EUR 2 under the park's rules16 Mar to 14 Oct 08:30 to 19:30, last entry 18:00, leave the area by 19:00; 15 Oct to 15 Mar 08:30 to 17:00, last entry 15:30, leave by 16:40

For most visitors with one day, a guided tour that names both entrances is the least stressful option. If you want to go at your own speed, buy the two tickets separately and use the train. Tickets for Pompeii are personalised and allow one entry, and a reseller ticket does not guarantee capacity on a busy day. The Pompeii tickets page has the rules.

Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day: order and timing

Opening hours decide how much time you have.

Closing time, last entry and the time you need to walk to the exit are three different moments. In the winter season, from 15 October to 15 March, both parks admit their last visitors at 15:30. That means you must start the second site before then, and at Herculaneum the area has to be left by 16:40. In the summer season, from 16 March to 14 October, the last entry is 17:30 at Pompeii and 18:00 at Herculaneum, so the days are longer.

Start with the site you care about most, and keep the second for the time that is left. Give each site real time, and expect to see the highlights rather than every house. The Pompeii ruins page and the Herculaneum page cover what each site offers.

Getting between the two sites

By Circumvesuviana.

The train link runs between the station Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri and the station Ercolano Scavi. The ride is covered by the one-way ticket on the walking tour from Pompeii. If you travel on your own, check the current EAV timetable and fares before you go, because the timetable is the weak point of a tight day. The getting there page explains the stations and entrances. A guided tour from Naples gives you the transfer in a vehicle instead.

Pompeii and Herculaneum: frequently asked questions

Does the Pompeii ticket include Herculaneum?

No. They are separate parks. A Pompei Express or Pompei+ ticket does not cover Ercolano, so tours must name both entrance tickets.

Can I see both in one day?

Yes, with enough time and an early start, but no one can promise that you see everything. Check closing time, last entry and the walk to the exit at each site.

How do I get from Pompeii to Herculaneum?

By Circumvesuviana, from Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri to Ercolano Scavi. One walking tour includes a one-way ticket for that ride.

Which is better to see first?

It depends on the day. Start with the site you most want to see, and keep the last entry times in mind: in winter both parks stop admitting visitors at 15:30.

Do the tours include lunch?

Only when you choose an option that includes it, such as the light lunch on the seven-hour tour from Naples. The walking tour from Pompeii does not include meals.
