Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius: the overview
Vesuvius rises behind almost every view of Pompeii. From the forum and from many streets of the site you look straight at it, and that is the simplest way to see the volcano: it is part of the visit anyway. Many visitors want more and ask how to visit Vesuvius as well, either on the same day or as a separate trip.
The two places are separate visits with separate tickets. A Pompeii ticket does not include the crater, and the mountain has its own entry. If you want ruins and volcano together, the easiest route is a combined day trip; see our Pompeii tours for the options.
This page is an overview only. It explains how Vesuvius relates to Pompeii and what to plan, not the details of the climb itself.

Pompeii and Vesuvius day trips
Day trips that combine the ruins of Pompeii with Mount Vesuvius, from Naples, Rome and Sorrento, with live prices and availability. Check the description to see which options include the Vesuvius entry and a guided walk.
Seeing Vesuvius from Pompeii
You do not need to leave the ruins to see the volcano. The view from the forum is the one most people photograph. The mountain is also visible from many streets of the site. On a clear day it is the backdrop to the whole visit.
The eruption of 79 AD destroyed the ancient town, and the volcano is the reason Pompeii survived as an archaeological site. The story is told on our history of Pompeii and the eruption page.
Pompeii to Vesuvius: getting there
The crater is a separate trip from Pompeii. EAV, the regional transport company, runs line 808 between Pompei and Vesuvio. The mountain section needs its own ticket, and a Pompeii entry does not cover it. Check the current departure times before you go, because they can change.
If you travel by Circumvesuviana train, see how to get to Pompeii first, because the stations and entrances differ. Pompei Scavi, the station near the ruins, and the station in the modern town are not the same starting point.
Do not plan a walk around the crater outside the areas that are open. Tours and visits stay within the permitted routes.
Pompeii and Vesuvius tours: what to look for
A combined tour saves you organising two trips, but the contents differ. Read the description before you book.
Entry tickets
Some tours include entry to both Pompeii and the Vesuvius national park, others only one. Pompeii and Vesuvius tickets are two separate entries.
The crater walk
On some tours the guided crater hike is an option you choose when booking, not a fixed part of the price. A walk to the crater is not the same as a volcanologist guide on the mountain.
Transport and lunch
Tours from Naples, Rome and Sorrento use a bus or coach. Lunch is included on some tours and optional on others.
Length of the day
Combined days run from roughly 8 to 12 hours depending on where you start. From Rome it is a full day.
Pompeii from Rome โ| Starting point | What the trips offer | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Naples | Pompeii with Vesuvius, some with lunch | From Naples |
| Rome | Full-day coach trip, Vesuvius as an option | From Rome |
| Sorrento | Guided day with lunch and Vesuvius | From Sorrento |
For most visitors with one day, a combined tour from Naples or Sorrento is the simplest way to see both. If you want to spend the whole day in the ruins, book Pompeii alone and enjoy the view of the volcano from there.
Pompeii and Vesuvius: frequently asked questions

No. The Pompeii ticket covers the archaeological site only. The mountain has its own entry.
How do I get from Pompeii to Vesuvius?
EAV runs line 808 between Pompei and Vesuvio. Check the current departures before you go. A combined tour includes the transfer.
Can I see Vesuvius from the ruins?
