Where to Stay for Pompeii

You can stay in Pompei town, in Naples or in Sorrento and still reach the ruins. This page compares the three bases by transport, tours and trip style.

Places to stay near Pompeii

Pompei town, Naples and Sorrento are three different bases. Pompei is closest to the ruins, Naples has the most transport and the most day-trip starting points, and Sorrento suits a coastal stay with a train connection. A hotel with "Pompeii" in its name does not mean it is near the entrance you will use or that a park ticket is included, so check the map.

Because trains and tours leave from all three places, the right base depends on what else you want from the trip. This page describes areas, not single hotels.

For most visitors, Naples is the most flexible base if you want more than the ruins. If Pompeii is the main goal and you want to start the day early, Pompei town is the shorter choice.

What each base is like

Areas, not hotel names.

Pompei town

The modern town beside the archaeological area is the shortest way to a gate. The station named Pompei serves the town, while Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri serves the ruins, so check which stop your entrance uses. See getting to Pompeii.

Naples

Several guided day trips meet in central Naples. A stay near the central meeting points keeps your morning short. The city also has an underground side, covered by the sister guide to the Rione SanitΓ  and its catacombs.

Sorrento

Sorrento suits a relaxed coastal trip with Pompeii as one day out. Some train tours meet at Sorrento station. The Amalfi Coast is reached from here, but you should not expect pick-ups on the coast itself. See Sorrento to Capri for island trips.

How to choose

Four questions.

1. How many days?

A single day at Pompeii works from any base. For two or more days, Naples gives the most choice for the other sites, including Herculaneum.

2. Which entrance?

Look at the entrance printed on your ticket or tour voucher. It may not be the one nearest your hotel.

3. Train or car?

The train works from all three places. A car is useful for villas outside the main site. See Oplontis and Stabiae.

4. When do you arrive?

Summer opening is 09:00 to 19:00 and winter 09:00 to 17:00, so a base that gets you to the gate early gains time. See the best time to visit.

If you arrive by air, note that Naples airport (NAP) has an announced closure in November 2026. Check the operator's notice before you book.

Where to stay for Pompeii: frequently asked questions

Should I stay in Pompei or Naples?

Pompei town is closest to the gates and suits an early start. Naples has more transport and day-trip starting points. Choose Naples if you want more than the ruins.

Is a hotel with Pompeii in its name close to the ruins?

Not necessarily. The name does not show walking distance to your entrance or an included park ticket. Check the location on a map.

Can I stay in Sorrento and visit Pompeii?

Yes. A local train links Sorrento and the ruins, and some train tours meet at Sorrento station. The trip is longer than from Pompei town.

Do I need to stay overnight at all?

No. Pompeii works as a day trip from Naples, Rome or Sorrento. Staying nearby helps if you want to arrive at opening time.

What do rooms cost?

Rates and any local tourist tax change by date and by property. Check the total when you book.
