Pompeii from Sorrento at a glance
From Sorrento you can reach Pompeii by local train, and one tour is built around that ride. Another day trip uses a bus and adds Vesuvius and lunch. The two differ in who meets you, how long the guide stays and whether lunch or Vesuvius is part of the day.
Look at the meeting point first. The train tour meets at Sorrento station and the Vesuvius tour at a municipal car park. Neither offers a general hotel pickup, so do not plan around one unless your booking confirmation states it.

Our picks: Pompeii from Sorrento
The train tour suits you if you want the shortest guided visit, the vehicle tour if you prefer a ride with entry and a guide, and the bus tour if you want to add Vesuvius and lunch.

Pompeii train tour and guided day trips from Sorrento
What each option includes.
Train tour with a guide
A member of staff meets you at Sorrento station at one of two meeting times, 09:30 or 10:00. It includes return local train tickets valid all day, a fast-track entrance ticket, listening devices in English only and a two-hour guided tour. You can stay longer on the site afterwards, but do not leave the site in between, or you pay for the entrance again. The tour starts only at Sorrento station: other stations and hotel pickups are not included.
Pompeii and Vesuvius with lunch
The nine-hour day has bus transport, a guide in Pompeii, a tour leader, lunch, an alpine guide on Vesuvius and both entrance tickets, including the Vesuvius National Park ticket. It meets at a municipal car park in Sorrento. The page on Pompeii and Vesuvius explains the volcano part. The Pompeii entry does not include the crater.
Pompeii and Herculaneum
Herculaneum is a second archaeological park with its own tickets and opening hours. Read Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day before you plan both from Sorrento.
Pompeii tours from Amalfi and Positano
The Amalfi Coast is a way to reach Sorrento, not a pickup area here.
If you are staying in Positano or Amalfi, no tour on this page starts there. You can plan a day trip from Amalfi to Pompeii by travelling to Sorrento first, then following one of the options above. Check the current timetables and allow for the extra time before the train or the meeting time.
A day on Capri leaves from Sorrento too, but it is a different trip. The Sorrento to Capri guide shows how that works.
Going from Sorrento on your own
Train, ticket and entrance.
Without a tour, you take the local train to Pompeii, buy a ticket at the entrances Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra or Piazza Anfiteatro, or in advance online, and walk in. Check the current timetable and fare for the line before you go. Two tickets apply from 12 January 2026: Pompei Express at EUR 20 for the city without the suburban villas, and Pompei+ at EUR 25 with them. Tickets are personalised and allow one entry. The tickets page has the rules, and the getting there page explains how the stations match the entrances.
