Oplontis, Stabiae and Boscoreale: Roman villas near Pompeii

Pompeii was a town. Around it lie further Roman sites, and several of them can be visited. They sit in different towns around Mount Vesuvius and each is a separate visiting site, not part of the Pompeii ruins.

This page gives you the overview: Villa Poppaea at Oplontis in Torre Annunziata, Villa San Marco and Villa Arianna at Stabiae in Castellammare di Stabia, and Villa Regina with its Antiquarium at Boscoreale. They suit a second or third day, or a visit for people who have already seen the forum and the houses of Pompeii. If this is your first visit, start with the Pompeii tickets page.

Do not assume that these sites open on the same days as Pompeii. Pompeii has its own daily opening; the villas follow their own schedule, and Tuesday is a closing day for several of them.

Oplontis: Villa Poppaea in Torre Annunziata

Oplontis is the villa at Torre Annunziata. It is also called Villa di Poppea. It is a separate visit from Pompeii, and you reach it from its own town, not from the Pompeii entrances.

The villa is closed on Tuesdays. Plan the day around that, and check the opening hours on the day you travel.

Stabiae: Villa San Marco and Villa Arianna

Stabiae lies at Castellammare di Stabia. Villa San Marco, Villa Arianna and the archaeological museum of Stabia are the visiting sites there. All three have Tuesday as a closing day.

Because the sites are in a different town, plan them separately from a Pompeii visit. Our getting there page explains the stations. A rental car can help for villas outside the main site, but check parking and local traffic rules in advance.

Boscoreale: Villa Regina and the Antiquarium

Villa Regina and the Antiquarium at Boscoreale are part of the Pompei Plus ticket (EUR 25 in 2026, which also covers the suburban villas on the Pompeii path and the shuttle). The simple Pompei Express ticket (EUR 20) covers the ancient town only. If you want the villas, choose the ticket that fits, and read our tickets guide before you buy.

Planning a visit to the villas

  • Start with Pompeii. The villas work as an addition after the main site. The ruins of Pompeii page tells you what to see first.
  • Check the day. Several villas are closed on Tuesday, so do not plan them for that day.
  • Check the ticket. Plus and wider area passes have different scope. The ticket for the town alone does not open the villas.
  • Allow travel time. The sites are in different towns, so they work better as a separate half day than as an extension of a Pompeii morning.
  • The Villa of the Mysteries is separate. It sits on the Pompeii suburban villa path; see the Villa of the Mysteries page.
